How to remove a wheel with a broken lug nut?
The rims on my car use a special key to remove the lug nuts. The lug nuts are on so tight that I broke the lug nut in half. The other half is still on the nut stud holding the tire on. How do I remove the broken nut or the entire nut stud to get the wheel off?
Actually both the 1st answers are correct. Not sure why someone put a thumbs down on the 1st answer relaying anti-sieze, and an individual person with an air compressor and air gun can remove this themselves, but it would be best to take it to a shop that already has experience in doing these types of removals.
I actually took my air gun, and with the shortest extention and socket that would fit over the lock (recommend a 12-pt. socket), if it wouldn’t, I would take an inexpensive socket and grind it down to the point it would fit. Then hammer it over the lock, put the short extension in the socket and air hammer it off. Sometimes the socket would break, sometimes it wouldn’t, which is why you use a cheap one.
You can take a chisel with steel sledge hammer and try to break the stud to remove the broken nut.
For the one’s that didn’t come off, I had to use a torch and very carefully torch it while someone was throwing water on it. We would also take wet rags and place them on the rim. It did a little damage to the rim sometimes, like a slight discoloration.
